Hollycombe House - for Gardens with Alpacas in Devon

Jenny Charlton and Graham Jelley

We both had successful businesses, when these were sold this enabled us to fulfill our dream of owning alpacas. The search for the right property took us to beautiful Devon. As soon as we saw Hollycombe House, nearly five acres of pristine lawns overlooking the Teign Estuary in Bishopsteignton, Devon, we knew immediately this was the place to start our new venture. Purchased the house end of March, moved to Hollycombe House in Devon, the following July bringing with us two cats and a dog.

Within a few days we started the fencing and as soon at this was completed the Alpacas arrived. Caramel, Bodie (pregnant with Edward who arrived in August), Amethyst and her daughter Anne this was the start of our herd. Also two pygmy goats Bill and Ben and then came the chickens and the ducks. After a very short time of owning these very endearing animals we decided to become fulltime breeders and Hollycombe Alpacas was created. Neither of us had any farming experience, so this was a huge learning curve. Alpacas are so very easy to train and gentle enough to be handled by children. Now we have 16 with 8 Cria due this year but this means we will have to part with some of them such a difficult decision as we love them all.

We are continuing to develop our breeding program by using the highest quality genetics available to us. Carefully selecting animals for their pedigree and temperament. In this way we can be sure that the herd standard continues to rise and makes the best animals available to our customers.

Here at Hollycombe House we open our beautiful garden for charity - National Gardens Scheme - several times a year so there is always much to see. So come and visit so that we may give you an insight to our lifestyle and to the rearing of Alpacas.
